Our history
The Founding
MediaMobil was founded in 1994 by Andreas Nil and Reiner Heyen following several years of work as research assistants at the University of Bremen. From the beginning, the engineers focused on the development of innovative satellite and communications systems. For example, they carried out projects to monitor new ships during sea trials, but also public and business facilities in desert regions.
Development
From 2000 to 2005, international research and development projects followed in which innovative satellite-based broadband services were developed and successfully tested. These included, for example, the projects “Satellite Integrated Services for the Year 2000” (SATISFY2000) and “Inter-Trial Testbed of Mobile Applications for Broadband Communications”(TOMAS).
Own Multilink Gateway
Expansion
Since then, MediaMobil has significantly expanded its maritime services. This was followed in 2012 by entry into the offshore wind market.
With the global expansion of its own satellite network, VSAT services were also made available to fixed and mobile users on land. This was triggered by the major earthquake in Haiti in 2010, for which MediaMobil set up a satellite system with Internet access and telephone connections for the German Red Cross on site within a few days and operated it during the entire mission.
Communication & Security
In the following years, communications services were provided to international construction groups and government agencies in isolated locations and crisis areas around the world via the MediaMobil VSAT network, including Africa, the Middle East and Asia.
When the communication of the relief forces in the Ahr Valley (Germany) collapsed immediately after the 2021 flood disaster, MediaMobil was commissioned by the Federal Agency for Digital Radio of Security Authorities and Organizations to restore communications. For this purpose, MediaMobil connected the six mobile base stations of the authorities’ network in the Ahr valley via satellite with the BOS digital radio in Neustrelitz, thus successfully replacing the destroyed terrestrial connections.
The future has already begun
At MediaMobil, the signs are clearly pointing to expansion. The company expects significant growth in backup solutions for critical infrastructures, such as those of energy providers and mobile network operators.
